5 Bad Weather Driving Tips To Keep You Safe

Winter Driving Conditions

No one wants to file an auto insurance claim in the winter months or during a storm. Yet, accidents increase during this time of the year. Being a safe driver may help minimize this outcome. It may also help you save on your car insurance coverage.

Consider these safe driver tips.

#1: Good Tires Make The Difference

In nearly all situations, the tires on your car determine the level of protection you have on icy roads. When roads are wet, a vehicle is more likely to swerve significantly or slip. Good traction on your tires can significantly lessen this risk. Take the vehicle into the shop to find out if your tire tread is still acceptable.

#2: Extra Space Counts

Another way to minimize risks is by putting more space between you and the vehicle in front of you. Make sure there is at least two to three car lengths between you and the person in front of you. Give more space if you are going at a faster rate of speed. This gives you more time to react properly to what they are doing.

#3: Grip The Steering Wheel

Another key way to avoid accidents is to be able to react fast enough. Having your hands on the steering wheel (yes, both hands) can help make that possible. It gives you more control and allows you to react faster than you would with only one hand on the wheel. Be sure you're your phone is in the back seat where you cannot reach it. Put your attention on the road.

#4: Monitor For Black Ice

Black ice is a term to describe ice that looks just like the pavement it is on. It is a very dangerous form of ice on roadways. Because it is thin and hard to see, you may have no idea it is there.

Assume it is present when temperatures are close to freezing. If you hit it, do not swerve or turn the vehicle drastically. Instead, take your foot off the gas and wait for the slipping to stop. All the while, try and stay out of the way of other vehicles.

#5: Slow Down And Be Patient

As you drive on traffic-filled roads, recognize that everyone should be going slow. You also want to be sure to be patient with other drivers who may be less experience with driving in these conditions.

Be sure to stock your vehicle with proper supplies. And, if an accident occurs, contact Busha-Okeson Insurance agent for help.
